TEACCH and adolescents, adults The TEACCH approach is based on the idea of using people with ASD's visual strengths to compenate for their difficulties. Therefore information - be it how the environment is set up, what the person is expected to do, is presented in a visual format that meets their assessed level of need. This doesn't mean that they are then 'stuck' there - good teachers will of course help children develop and move on to maximise their potential. Hwever it does mean that we don't pitch things too high for them. TEACCH also uses the child with ASD's preference for routine to teach helpful routines, such as 'check your schedule' or 'work left to right', 'work top to bottom'.
All of these approaches are generalisable out of the classroom, and into mainstream settings and adult life. They are also generalisable into the 'real world'. I use a daily schedule at work -my diary. I use visual information every day - road signs, etc. One of the problems about TEACCH as it is done in the UK is that it is seen as being a) classroom-bound and b) potentially restrictive in terms of preventing the young person moving on. People using TEACCH approaches are functioning in jobs in the 'real world', across the world, that they would be unable to maintain without the visual supports the system provides - daily routines, 'rules' for how to deal with break times or when they're stressed, visual indicators of where to go, what to do. There's no reason why TEACCH approaches can't be transfered to these settings, other than a reluctance to see TEACCh as anything other than a 'school-based approach' or a narrow understanding of what 'TEACCH' is - e.g. nothing more than baskets, work stations, Mayer-Johnson symbols. These are the tools, but not the philosophy. For a good overview of what TEACCH is, please read the article 'What is TEACCH' by Gary Mesibov on the TEACCH websire www.teacch.com
