Hi Felicity , he must be very confused just now - so i think getting him to "confront" this is a little ambitious! He is exactly the same boy you have known and loved all of his life - its just now that you have a name for the reason he sees life slightly differently from us average, boring people. But to him maybe he has just been given a label that worries him and makes him feel as though he is just different and dosen't belong. You can't make him do anything at the moment but you can do lots yourself . How much do you know about aspergers? A good starting point is "freaks geeks and aspergers - a guide for adolescents" by Luke Jackson a 14 year old boy with aspergers.(www.jkp.com) If you read it first and leave it around he may have a look. It is funny and informataive . I would have thought that the other thing is to make sure he REALLY knows that he has not changed and none of his family feel one jot different about him . I have to disagree with a previous poster - for goodness sake don't start trying therapies on him - you will just be reinforcing the idea that there is something wrong with him . When he reads a bit himself - when he is feeling less shocked -perhaps he may want to explore these things himself . As for school, personally i would write to the LEA and demand a statement of special educational needs and tell them that he is deeply unhappy in his current school enviroment. They are legally obliged to review his needs - that may give you some time to discuss with him what he wants. But you have no legal obligation to have him in school - as long as you are prepared to provide educcation at home..and that does NOT have to be lessons - just helping him get access to education through on line learning etc .The LEA just love making you feel like you will be breaking the law by keeping him at home but you won't , as long as he is learning ( reading, using computer,making things,going to museums etc etc ) I can post support groups if you and he are interested . You will need to formally withdraw him from school ( just write a letter) if this is what you want to do . Any way - give him time , give yourself time and just reassure him until you are both a bit better placed to talk about this . PLEASE don't rush him, he must be reeling . Regards Deborah
