It shouldnt be a postal code lottery, the higher rate is for severe disabilities my son gets it as he is diagnosed as severe, but I do know of others who have a child not as severe who also get it. Somethiing has gone wrong somewhere down the line and you need to chase everyone up who has been in touch with DLA, and ask to see what information they provided, because if they have said he is severe and in their opinion eligible then the DLA would be arguing a Doctors diagnosis. They always write to the people you provide so it wont be letters in your posession but direct replies, also when you filled in the form did you give the worst case scenario of your childs behaviour and difficulties. I hope this helps, but if I were you I would do some more digging on the information provided by others before contacting DLA so when you go again you have a very strong case, video footage, testimonials absolutely anything you can lay hands on. When I fill in the forms for instance I would say it was absolutely impossible to leave my child unattended rather than very difficult, have you got copies of your forms, maybe you understated the extent of his difficulties, I am not suggesting you didnt fill in properly just tryiing to work out what happened, maybe the paed refered to your son as difficult or just didnt word it strongly enough. Also what did you put for care at night, my son is up through the night therefore requiring 24hr care, I know this is relevant when applying for DLA, its possible to have a less severe autistic child who does not sleep at night and becomes a danger requiring the 24hr thing but also although rare you can have a severe child who really DOES sleep through the night. Go back to square one check everything out and see if you can pinpoint what went wrong. Good Luck.
